Bellingham GMRS

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a license?

Yes — GMRS requires an FCC license, but there's no exam. You apply and pay a fee, and one license covers your whole family. See Getting your GMRS license.

How much does a radio cost?

You can get on the air for around $25–$40. See Buying your first radio.

Do I have to be technical?

Not at all. If you can work a TV remote, you can work a radio. We'll help with setup, and listening is most of it.

When and where is the net?

Every Saturday at 8:30 PM on the Bellingham 550 repeater (462.550) and every Sunday at 7:30 PM on the Sumas 675 repeater (462.675). Everyone's welcome, especially first-timers.

I'm shy about talking on the radio. Is that okay?

Completely okay. Listen for as long as you like. When you're ready, a simple check-in is all it takes — and we're a friendly bunch.

Is this the same as ham radio?

Related, but simpler. Ham (amateur) radio requires an exam and covers much more. GMRS is the easy on-ramp: a license with no test, and inexpensive radios.
