Bellingham GMRS

Getting your GMRS license

To transmit on GMRS you need an FCC license — but the good news is there is no exam. You simply apply and pay a fee.

What you get

  • One license covers your entire immediate family (spouse, children, parents, and other close relatives).
  • The license is good for about ten years and is renewable.
  • You'll be issued a call sign (something like WRXY123) that identifies you on the air.

How to apply

  1. Register for an FCC Registration Number (FRN) at FCC CORES — create an FCC username, then register a new FRN.
  2. Log into the FCC ULS License Manager at wireless2.fcc.gov with that FRN, choose Apply for a New License, and pick radio service code ZA — General Mobile Radio Service.
  3. Fill out the application wizard (your info, a few yes/no eligibility questions), sign it on the certification page, and submit.
  4. Pay the $35 application fee — due within 10 days of filing, payable by card in ULS.
  5. Wait for the grant. It typically shows up in ULS license search within a couple of weeks — that's your call sign and confirmation you're good to transmit.

Once you're licensed

Program your radio for our repeater (see Programming your radio), then come check in on the Saturday net. Use your call sign when you transmit — it's how everyone knows who's talking, and it's required by the rules.
